Aurora cannabis in Medicine Hat “pausing operations indefinitely”

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Chat News has learned of a major development regarding the future of Aurora Sun in Medicine Hat.

Aurora announced Friday it is pausing operations indefinitely, saying in an emailed statement, it “continuously and carefully reviews its operations network to ensure it’s a fit for our business today and in the near future.”

In response to the recent shifts in the industry, the company announced it will pause operations.

The 1.6 million square foot facility, which is roughly equal to 21 football fields, was first announced in April 2018.

It was expected to result in 650 jobs.

Aurora Sun has made several changes to proposed operations in the last couple of years. It had planned to scale back to six grow bays that will allow for efficient scale production on an as-needed basis as market demand grew.

Medicine Hat Mayor Ted Clugston says he knew layoffs were coming at Aurora Sun as the company has been keeping him in the loop.

Aurora informed him earlier today that they were pausing the plant “temporarily”. Clugston says “temporarily” was stressed in the conversation.

It’s not known how many jobs will be lost.

Clugston says it has been a long process but he is still very optimistic about the operation.

“It’s their flagship facility in the world right now and that’s a very, very difficult thing to walk away from. And should they walk away from it I mean, obviously it should have some value to somebody else be it cucumbers, or red peppers, or another THC operation. So I’m disappointed and I wanted to see all those jobs but I haven’t given up yet I am optimistic that at one point that facility will be up and running,” he told Chat News.

Clugston says the reasoning for the pause is because Aurora has enough production at their other facilities to meet current demand.
