1,731 new COVID cases reported across Alberta Saturday, new daily high

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta has set a new record high for daily COVID-19 cases.

On Saturday, 1,731 new cases were confirmed for the past 24 hours. This brings the provincial total of cases to 54,836.

14,931 of those cases are active, with 39,381 Albertans having recovered from the novel coronavirus.

Five new deaths were reported across Alberta, bringing the provincial death toll to 524. The new deaths were in the Calgary and Edmonton zones.

Currently, 415 people are in hospital, with 88 in intensive care.

The province has noted that 2,211,110 tests have been completed, with 1,455,291 people having been tested.

The province reported the completion of 21,657 tests on November 28.

Multiple vaccine candidates are touting their vaccines as highly effective. On Friday evening, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said that when a vaccine does become available in Canada, it would not be mandatory in Alberta.

The regional breakdown for cases in the province is as follows:

  • Calgary zone – 22,544 cases with 5,446 active
    • 194 deaths (two new)
    • 137 in hospital, 25 in ICU
  • Edmonton zone – 22,163 cases with 6,968 active
    • 228 deaths (three new)
    • 208 in hospital, 51 in ICU
  • South zone – 3,743 cases with 627 active
    • 42 deaths
    • 18 in hospital, five in ICU
  • North Zone – 3,636 cases with 802 active
    • 45 deaths
    • 26 in hospital, two in ICU
  • Central zone – 2,547 cases with 992 active
    • 15 deaths
    • 26 in hospital, five in ICU

203 cases are in what’s listed as an “unknown” zone. 96 of those cases are active.

Below is a breakdown for the South Health Zone:

  • Brooks – 1,277 cases (three new), 43 active, 12 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 956 cases (19 new), 178 active, seven deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 373 cases (nine new), 63 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 313 cases (three new), 48 active, three deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 270 cases (seven new), 67 active, two deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 315 cases (six new), 70 active, two deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 257 cases (seven new), 108 active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 231 cases (three new), 96 active, four deaths
  • Cardston County – 161 cases, 26 active, five deaths
  • Cypress County – 115 cases (one new), 25 active, zero deaths
  • County of Warner – 108 cases (two new), 25 active, one death
  • County of Forty Mile – 104 cases (four new), 22 active, one death
  • County of Newell – 100 cases, 14 active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 47 cases, four active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 36 cases, four active, two deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – Five cases, one active, zero deaths
