Poultry farmers welcome announcement of federal assistance

Nov 30, 2020 | 3:39 PM

OTTAWA, AB. — The federal government is working to follow through with its committment to provide compensation for Canada’s supply managed sectors by the coming spring.

The move is to offset the impact of market losses from the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership or (CPTPP).

Federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau has said officials are putting together the last details before the second payment is made.

Last year the federal government offered the first installment of a $1.75 billion payout to dairy producers to cover market losses from negotiations of two trade deals last year.

Between December 2019 and January 2020, more than 10,000 dairy farmers received a cash payment of $345 million. The government set a schedule to deliver the remaining $1.4 billion through direct payments to farmers over three years.

Other supply-managed commodities and details would be announced before April 2021 for the poultry sector.

Egg Farmers of Canada, Chicken Farmers of Canada, Turkey Farmers of Canada and Canadian Hatching Egg Producers said they were pleased with the weekend announcement of $691 million for 10-year programs for Canada’s 4,800 chicken, egg, broiler hatching egg, and turkey farmers.

Poultry farmers have also suffered significant market losses as a result of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). We look forward to working with government officials to assess CUSMA support measures. The program measures will help farmers plan for the future and work towards national goals of growing the country’s agricultural sector.

Program details will be established in consultation with sector representatives.
