Face mask bylaw approved in Taber

Dec 1, 2020 | 12:30 PM

TABER, AB – Effective immediately, residents of Taber will be required to wear face coverings in some circumstances.

During a special meeting of council Monday, Bylaw 22-2020, the Temporary Face Coverings Bylaw, was approved.

It requires the use of face masks in all indoor, enclosed, and substantially-enclosed public places or in public vehicles.

It applies to all individuals 10 years of age or older.

While the bylaw includes a $100 fine for those in violation, the Town of Taber said in a press release that “the Town’s intention is not to be punitive, but those who refuse to comply with the mandatory measures can be subject to a fine.”

“The Town acknowledges that this is a polarizing issue for many, but this measure has been taken due to the rising COVID-19 cases in our region and to help protect our citizens and those who are vulnerable to the virus.”

Regardless of your views on the use of masks, the town asks everyone to be courteous and non-judgemental to business owners, workers, and anyone you encounter in public.

The decision to approve the bylaw was made to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases.

As of Monday, November 30, there have been 251 total cases and four deaths in the M.D. of Taber, which includes the town and several surrounding areas. 100 infections are currently active.

LNN has reached out to the mayor of Taber for additional comments.
