Alberta COVID cases surge to record 1,854 in one day

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released Thursday’s report on COVID-19, covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

1,854 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 63,023. Of those, 17,743 cases are active while 44,705 people have recovered.

For the first time since the pandemic began, the Calgary Zone no longer has the most cases to date in the province. That unfortunate distinction has gone to the Edmonton Zone, who saw 1,003 positive tests in just the past day.

In the South Health Zone, 42 people contracted the virus with Lethbridge’s 24 making up the bulk.

Since yesterday’s update, 14 Albertans have died from COVID-19 including 10 people in the Edmonton Zone, two in the Calgary Zone, and one each in the South and North Zones. To date, 575 people in the province have died as a result of the virus.

The person in the South Zone was from Brooks.

Provincially, 551 patients are currently hospitalized and 97 have been admitted to intensive care.

19,600 tests were completed in the last day, meaning a total of 2,309,153 tests have been done on 1,495,622 different people.

The regional breakdown for COVID-19 in Alberta is as follows:

  • Edmonton zone – 25,898 cases, 8,331 active
    • 258 deaths (10 new)
    • 269 in hospital, 61 in ICU
  • Calgary zone – 25,591 cases, 6,445 active
    • 204 deaths (two new)
    • 162 in hospital, 24 in ICU
  • North zone – 4,136 cases, 991 active
    • 49 deaths (one new)
    • 23 in hospital, two active
  • South zone – 4,029 cases, 633 active
    • 47 deaths (one new)
    • 20 in hospital, five in ICU
  • Central zone – 3,145 cases, 1,251 active
    • 17 deaths
    • 37 in hospital, five in ICU

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,288 cases, 33 active, 14 deaths (one new)
  • Lethbridge – 1,067 cases (24 new), 223 active, seven deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 418 cases (four new), 85 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 342 cases (seven new), 57 active, three deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 307 cases (13 new), 81 active, two deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 341 cases (four new), 64 active, two deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 297 cases (eight new), 101 active, four deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 263 cases (one new), 82 active, four deaths
  • Cardston County – 176 cases (three new), 30 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 124 cases, 31 active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 119 cases (one new), 11 active, zero deaths
  • County of Newell – 114 cases (one new), 21 active, two deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 113 cases (two new), 19 active, one death
  • Fort Macleod – 48 cases, one active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 40 cases, eight active, two deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – Seven cases, two active, zero deaths
