Taber community lights up for Winter Festival

TABER, AB – 2020 has been a tough year for everyone, but for the residents of Taber, nothing was going to break their Christmas spirit.

The Taber & District Chamber of Commerce recently put on its 2020 Taber Winter Festival with some retail promotions carrying on until December 11^th.

Families gathered downtown to warm themselves by the fire and even got to take a photo or two with Santa while basking in the lighting of a massive wire-frame Christmas tree that was suspended from a ladder truck, standing 24 feet high with a 12-foot diameter.

Event organizers say the Taber Winter Festival served two purposes – one is to reinvigorate community spirit and the other is to get people into local businesses.

The Winter Festival got its start as Midnight Madness, which brought people out and got them excited. It was a shop local event before they even thought to call it that.

Through the Passport to Christmas program, residents can print off a “passport” or pick one up at a participating retail location. By shopping at local businesses, they can earn stamps that will give them opportunities to win up to $1,000 in Taber Chamber Bucks, a local currency that can be used to make purchases at an array of Taber businesses.

Stores across Taber decked their halls in festive decorations in hopes of being named the Best Decorated Business. The winner, which was determined by a poll on the Chamber’s Facebook page, was Escape Salon and Spa.

All of the festival activities that took place were planned to ensure compliance with COVID-19 guidelines. While this, unfortunately, meant that some planned events had to be cancelled, there was still plenty for families to enjoy.

The public was able to take in some free bowling thanks to sponsorships from the Taber Bowling Centre, ATB Financial, and MNP. As well, The Taber Kinsmen Club offered free skating and Taber Home & Farm Centre ensured free swimming for the evening.

Friday’s festivities also included a tree lighting ceremony, free kids crafts to-go, hayrides, and photos with Santa.
