Provincial COVID positivity rate a “grim milestone” as 1,828 cases confirmed

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released Friday’s report on COVID-19, covering statistics from the past 24 hours.

1,828 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 64,851. Of those, 18,243 cases are active while 46,018 people have recovered.

“Our provincial positive rate has risen to 10.5 per cent and we now have 18,243 active cases. This positivity rate is a grim milestone and one that should concern us all,” says Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw.

Approximately 82 per cent of the new infections were in the Edmonton and Calgary Zones who saw 827 and 680 positive tests respectively.

In the South Zone, 59 cases were identified including 27 in Lethbridge.

The region currently has 630 active cases with Lethbridge making up 227 of those.

Since yesterday’s update, 15 Albertans have died from COVID-19 with 12 in the Edmonton Zone, two in the Calgary Zone, and one in the Central Zone. To date, 590 Albertans have died as a result of the virus.

Provincially, 533 patients are currently hospitalized and 99 have been admitted to intensive care.

With approximately 17,200 tests being completed in Alberta over the past 24 hours, there have now been 2,326,411 tests mong 1,502,472 different people.

The regional breakdown for COVID-19 in Alberta is as follows:

  • Edmonton zone – 26,725 cases, 8,578 active
    • 270 deaths (12 new)
    • 282 in hospital, 63 in ICU
  • Calgary zone – 26,271 cases, 6,666 active
    • 206 deaths (two new)
    • 167 in hospital, 24 in ICU
  • North zone – 4,262 cases, 1,012 active
    • 49 deaths
    • 26 in hospital, two active
  • South zone – 4,088 cases, 630 active
    • 47 deaths
    • 19 in hospital, five in ICU
  • Central zone – 3,265 cases, 1,251 active
    • 18 deaths (one new)
    • 39 in hospital, five in ICU

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,289 cases (one new), 25 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 1,094 cases (27 new), 227 active, seven deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 423 cases (five new), 85 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 353 cases (11 new), 64 active, three deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 318 cases (11 new), 88 active, two deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 348 cases (seven new), 67 active, two deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 305 cases (eight new), 97 active, four deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 263 cases, 75 active, four deaths
  • Cardston County – 182 cases (six new), 28 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 129 cases (five new), 31 active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 121 cases (two new), 12 active, zero deaths
  • County of Newell – 114 cases, 19 active, two deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 112 cases. 17 active, one death
  • Fort Macleod – 48 cases, one active, three deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 44 cases (four new), 12 active, two deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – Seven cases, two active, zero deaths
