1,727 COVID cases, nine deaths confirmed in Alberta

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released Tuesday’s report on COVID-19, covering the statistics from the past 24 hours.

Premier Jason Kenney also announced new restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of COVID.

1,727 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 72,028. Of those, 20,388 cases are active while 51,000 people have recovered.

Approximately 80 per cent of the new cases were in the Edmonton and Calgary Zones who saw 791 and 583 positive tests respectively.

Meanwhile, in the South Zone, 57 positive tests were identified including 22 in Lethbridge and 11 in Medicine Hat.

Since yesterday’s update, nine Albertans have died from COVID including five in the Edmonton Zone, two in the Calgary Zone, and one each in the South and Central Zones. To date, the virus has claimed the lives of 640 in the province.

The death in the South Zone was for a person from Lethbridge County, although no further details were provided.

Provincially, 654 patients are currently hospitalized and 112 have been admitted to intensive care.

With 19,109 tests being completed in the past 24 hours, there have now been a total of 2,410,675 tests done among 1,534,783 people.

The regional breakdown for COVID-19 in Alberta is as follows:

  • Edmonton zone – 29,901 cases, 9,383 active
    • 304 deaths (five new)
    • 357 in hospital, 66 in ICU
  • Calgary zone – 28,946 cases, 7,529 active
    • 215 deaths (two new)
    • 198 in hospital, 34 in ICU
  • North zone – 4,757 cases, 1,212 active
    • 51 deaths
    • 31 in hospital, four in ICU
  • South zone – 4,307 cases, 646 active
    • 50 deaths (one new)
    • 18 in hospital, two in ICU
  • Central zone – 3,881 cases, 1,526 active
    • 20 deaths (one new)
    • 50 in hospital, six in ICU

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,296 cases (two new), 24 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 1,175 cases (22 new), 259 active, seven deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 449 cases (four new), 88 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 368 cases (five new), 65 active, three deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 358 cases (13 new), 106 active, two deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 371 cases (seven new), 63 active, three deaths (one new)
  • Medicine Hat – 334 cases (11 new), 89 active, five deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 282 cases (three new), 63 active, four deaths
  • Cardston County – 200 cases (two new), 37 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 137 cases (one new), 30 active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 127 cases (one new), 13 active, zero deaths
  • County of Newell – 117 cases (one new), 18 active, two deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 112 cases. 12 active, two deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 62 cases (six new), 26 active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 52 cases (two new), five active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – Eight cases, one active, zero deaths
