Coaldale’s Trevor Pritchard, convicted child sex offender, a “high risk to re-offend”

COALDALE, AB – The dangerous offender hearing continues this week for a man from Coaldale.

Trevor Pritchard, 35, has been convicted four times of sex-related offences including sexual assault, luring, and child pornography. Convictions occurred in 2004, 2009, 2010, and 2019.

If granted, a dangerous offender designation means Pritchard would be designated a high-risk to society, so even after his sentence has concluded, he could remain in custody indefinitely.

Forensic Psychologist Dr. David Tano testified in Lethbridge Court of Queen’s Bench Wednesday.

He conducted psychological assessments of Pritchard in August 2018 and June 2019.

In both assessments, he categorized Pritchard as having a high risk of recidivism due to several risk factors:

  • Relationship instability
  • Emotionally identifying with younger girls over adult women
  • General social isolation
  • Impulsivity
  • Poor problem-solving skills
  • Negative emotionality (trying to blame, deny, or minimize problems)
  • A preoccupation with sex and using sex as a coping mechanism

Dr. Tano was also concerned that, while in custody in 2018, a pile of 80 pages of mostly handwritten letters was uncovered in his bed that included everything from sexual letters to underaged girls he had previously communicated with, threats, anti-woman rants, and a novel he was working on that contains many graphically-sexual details.

This occurred between the two assessments, which drove his recidivism score up but still kept him in the same category of “high”.

Although Pritchard has taken part in sex offender programs in the past, Dr. Tano recommended that he take them again. He claimed that many who do the program multiple times have a lower risk of reoffending.

Pritchard’s dangerous offender hearing has been ongoing for much of 2020. Back in August, Parole Officer Mai Jaing said he was a “medium-risk” offender, but under the emotional category of his Dynamic Factors Summary, he had a “high need for improvement.”
