Eight new Peace Officers introduced for Lethbridge area

Dec 11, 2020 | 1:07 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB– The Lethbridge and surrounding area are getting eight new Community Peace Officers (CPO).

This new class of officers completed 10 weeks of training and will now be sent out into the field.

Three of the CPOs who have completed the training will work with the Siksika Nation with the others continuing training with the Lethbridge Police Service.

CPOs have their own roles within the LPS, but don’t have the “full-trainìng“ certificate.

They can enforce city bylaws and provincial statutes as well as some provisions of the Criminal Code.

To date, more than 7,300 occurrences have been handled by CPOs since they were introduced in 2019.

Friday’s graduation ceremony marked the eight new officers’ official release to work and train.

CPOs will be able to help LPS and their duties in the cell block and bail hearings, with plans to do the same in other positions not requiring a fully-trained officer.

The graduates with the Lethbridge Police Service and Siksika Nation will provide greater visibility in the community and the opportunity to focus police efforts on priority issues.
