Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame reschedules 2020 induction banquet, launches new website

LETHBRIDGE, AB – COVID-19 has led the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame (LSHOF) to reschedule its 2020 induction banquet.

Instead of honouring inductees before year’s end, the LSHOF will hold a banquet in the fall of 2021. With that, the organization has decided to not name a new class of inductees for 2021.

“This decision gives time for the class of 2020 to be properly recognized before a new class is named,” the LSHOF said in a release.

Hall of Fame chair Dave McMurray said part of being inducted is enjoying an evening of celebration with family and friends.

“We want to ensure the class of 2020 still has that moment. With on-going steps to halt this pandemic, including the introduction of vaccines and other measures, we believe an induction banquet next fall is a realistic timeline,” he stated.

The original plan for this year was to hold an induction banquet on May 1, however, that was cancelled because of the pandemic.

The 2020 class was announced back in February and includes:

  • Athlete: Jolene Watson (Schweitzer) – soccer
  • Team: 1983 Schwartz Angels – Canadian slo-pitch champions
  • Builder: Eunice David – figure skating
  • Builder: Mary Dyck – soccer, volleyball and wheelchair basketball
  • Builder: Cliff Nelson – multi-sport
  • Builder: Howard Rasmussen – volleyball

The LSHOF said it will return to its traditional schedule with a new induction class and banquet in the spring of 2022.

Nominations for the Hall of Fame are submitted by members of the public and can be received at any time. More on the nomination process is available here.

NEW WEBSITE

The LSHOF has announced its new online look. The organization has launched a re-vamped website.

“Designed to tie-in with the LSHOF’s new permanent site in the ATB Centre, which will likely be officially opened in 2021, the new website boasts an impressive design, an easily scheduled database of all inductees and an online process for submitting nomination packages,” the LSHOF noted in its release.

Chair Dave McMurray said they want to ensure Lethbridge’s sports history has a ‘living legacy’ and the new website is a big step in that direction.

“This website makes it easy and accessible for anyone to learn about and be inspired by those who have come before,” he said.

The new website can be seen at lethbridgesportshalloffame.ca.
