LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a very special day for George Wilson and his family.

December 12 marked the World War II veteran’s 100th birthday.

Members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Lethbridge Police Service, volunteers from the Salvation Army and Wilson’s family and friends came together for a surprise drive-by celebration in front of his home.

One of Wilson’s daughters, Sandy Wilson, said she got the idea for a drive-by from a cousin in Calgary who had been a part of one for someone else. The original plan was to hold a drop-in party at the Salvation Army, but due to COVID-19, that could not take place. So, something else had to be done to celebrate.

Eventually, Wilson got in touch with Lethbridge Police Chief Shahin Mehdizadeh, who helped organize the event. Wilson also gave credit to a friend named Matt who helped put together the event, along with all friends and family involved.

It was a perfect day to celebrate, with the sun shining bright in north Lethbridge.

George Wilson was born December 12, 1920 in Manola, Alberta before moving to Lethbridge at the age of nine. He was raised with six brothers and two sisters.

Wilson later joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1941, being discharged after World War II. During his time in the war, he served in England, France, Italy and Holland.

In recognition of his years of service, Wilson is a recipient of a Quilt of Valor. More on the Quilts of Valor program is available here.

Married to his wife Barbara for 72 years, they had eight children, one of whom has since passed away. After several of their children left home, George and Barbara fostered many kids, adopting one. Together, they have 12 grandchildren (two since deceased) and 17 great grandchildren (one of whom is deceased).

George told LNN his birthday was “just another day”. He had no idea about the drive-by, but it was a nice birthday surprise.

“He says, oh it’s just another day, but I think it’s just great and I’m sure he’s really enjoyed it,” Sandy said.

Vehicles were decorated with birthday signs and George’s family collected cards for the WWII veteran.
