Rent in Lethbridge up year over year, but city remains affordable

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Rental properties in Lethbridge went up year over year, but the city is still an affordable place to live for renters.

That’s according to the latest National Rent Report from Rentals.ca and Bullpen Research and Consulting.

Out of the 35 cities included in the report, Lethbridge came in 32nd on the list. In November, the average rent for a one-bedroom residence was $953. A two-bedroom was, on average, at $1,112.

Year over year, average monthly rent increased 0.8 percent for a one-bedroom and 5.8 percent for two-bedroom. Month over month, average rent for a one-bedroom was up 0.5 percent in November and up 3.3 percent for a two-bedroom last month.

In all of Alberta, Calgary was the most expensive city to live in last month. The report factors in six different cities in Alberta.

YYC placed 24th on the list for one-bedroom residences, with the average monthly rent in November at $1,173. For two-bedrooms, Calgary placed 26th with an average monthly rent set at $1,480.

Average monthly rent declined three percent in Alberta year over year in 2020 from $1,275 in 2019 to $1,232 in November of 2020.

Condominium apartments saw the biggest drop out of all property types this year, with average monthly rents falling 19 percent annually to $2,038 from $2,508 in November 2019.

Toronto and Vancouver were listed as the top two most expensive cities to live in. The full breakdown can be viewed here.
