LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released Thursday’s report on COVID-19, detailing the numbers that were confirmed in the past 24 hours.

1,571 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 86,168. Of those, 19,865 cases are active while 65,513 people have recovered.

Approximately 84 per cent of the new infections were in the Edmonton and Calgary Zones who saw 760 and 552 positive tests respectively.

Meanwhile, in the South Zone, 34 people contracted the virus with 13 of them in Lethbridge.

Since yesterday’s update, 30 Albertans have died from COVID-19 including 17 in the Edmonton Zone, 12 in the Calgary Zone, and one in the Central Zone.

This marks a new record for the single-day death toll in the province, meaning the virus has now claimed the lives of 790 people.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says not all of these deaths took place over the past 24 hours, but rather, they were reported to the AHS system in that period.

“This is the highest figure I have had the sad task of reporting. If anyone still needs reminding of the seriousness of this virus, of the importance of the restrictions that are currently in place, and the importance of doing everything possible to limit our interactions and break the chains of transmission, this is it.”

Provincially, 763 patients are currently hospitalized and 138 have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 19,852 tests completed over the last day, there has now been a total of 2,582,182 tests done on 1,594,242 different people.
