West Side house fire caused by tipped-over candle

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services is urging the public to be careful with candles.

Crews responded to a residential fire on Oxford Road West at approximately 12:43 am on Friday, December 18.

Upon arrival, firefighters found light smoke flowing out of the home’s front door. Flames were visible out of the rear kitchen window.

“An occupant of the residence had discovered a candle had tipped over in the kitchen,” reads a press release from the fire department.

Members from two stations responded and extinguished the fire.

It has been determined to be accidental.

“Residents are reminded to never leave candles or open flame devices unattended.”

No one was hurt. Damages are estimated to be $80,000.
