Province reports 26 new COVID-19 deaths, 26 new cases in South Zone

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The province reported less new cases than Friday, but Saturday’s COVID-19 report still saw a large number of new infections in Alberta.

1,352 new positive tests were confirmed. There are now 88,933 cases across Alberta, with 19,260 of those remaining active.

777 people are in hospital with 151 in intensive care units across Alberta. As well, the province reported 26 new deaths. This brings the provincial death toll to 841.

Saturday’s report noted in total, there have been 2,620,400 completed tests, with 1,605,776 people tested. 18,502 tests were completed on December 18.

Below is a breakdown of cases by health zone:

  • Edmonton zone – 38,141 cases, 9,174 active
    • 423 deaths (18 new)
    • 432 in hospital, 89 in ICU
  • Calgary zone – 34, 757 cases, 6,943 active
    • 273 deaths (six new)
    • 227 in hospital, 42 in ICU
  • North zone – 5,871 cases, 1,122 active
    • 60 deaths (one new)
    • 31 in hospital, eight in ICU
  • Central zone – 5,204 cases, 1,450 cases
    • 31 deaths (one new)
    • 73 in hospital, eight in ICU
  • South zone – 4,729 cases, 479 active
    • 53 deaths (no new deaths)
    • 14 in hospital, four in ICU

The province has 231 cases (92 active) listed in zones that are unknown, along with one death.

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by communities is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,334 cases (four new), 43 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 1,319 cases (eight new), 168 active, seven deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 411 cases, 68 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 416 cases (five new), 54 active, three deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 492 cases (three new), 46 active, two deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 406 cases (four new), 42 active, three deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 403 cases (six new), 77 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 297 cases (one new), 19 active, six deaths
  • Cardston County – 241 cases, 46 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 142 cases, five active, two deaths
  • County of Newell – 136 cases, 14 active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 137 cases (two new), 11 active, zero deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 113 cases, one active, two deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 89 cases, 33 active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 67 cases, 16 active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 10 cases, two active, zero deaths

Canada-wide, the country surpassed the 500,000 case mark earlier Saturday.

The latest 100,000 new cases were reported in just the last 15 days, marking the shortest growth period in the country since the pandemic was declared in March.
