MEDICINE HAT, AB – A man is in custody after causing an estimated $50,000 worth of damage to the windows at Medicine Hat’s police station.

According to police, patrol members inside the station heard banging on the windows of the front lobby area at about 6 a.m. Wednesday. When they arrived at the front of the building, they located a 30-year-old man with a hammer actively smashing windows.

The suspect was taken into custody.

The lobby doors as well as the windows of the museum and Community Boardroom were damaged in the incident. As a result, public access will be temporarily restricted.

Inspector Joe West says the suspect is waiting for a bail hearing.

“We don’t know what, he certainly seemed to be out of sorts, we don’t know exactly if he was under the influence of any particular substance. However, in these types of circumstances, that usually is a factor.”

Until the area is repaired, the public is asked to contact Medicine Hat police on the non-emergency line 403-529-8481 or 911 in an emergency.

To report a motor vehicle collision with no injuries, call the Collision Reporting Centre at 403-581-1070. Online reports may also be submitted via the MHPS mobile app.
