LETHBRIDGE, AB – Tree’s a crowd and it is time to get rid of yours.

The City of Lethbridge will hold its annual Christmas Tree Collection Program on Saturday, January 9.

This year, Senator Buchanan Elementary School will be conducting collection with family and volunteers with all proceeds supporting the school’s fundraising efforts.

Gordon Prest, Environmental Initiatives Coordinator with the city, explains that a small portion of each residents’ waste collection fees goes towards a fund that supports a local youth group to conduct Christmas tree collection.

If you want to have your tree picked up, there is no need to sign up.

“Christmas trees should be visible, stripped of all decorations and placed outside by 7 a.m. on Jan. 9 to be collected. Christmas trees should be placed by the regular garbage collection location (front or alley), but away from the blue and black carts. Christmas trees will be collected from all areas of the city. Depending on weather and equipment, the collection may happen over a few of days,” reads a press release from the city.

Since the program’s inception 27 years ago, more than 80,000 Christmas trees have been diverted from the landfill and turned into mulch. This mulch is given to residents at no charge on a first-come-first-served basis at Peenaquim Park.

Christmas trees can also be composted at the Waste & Recycling Centre any time of the year. Saturdays are free for the first 250 kg of waste.

Youth groups interested in future collections are encouraged to contact Waste & Recycling Services to learn how to make a submission.
