AHS reports 843 new COVID cases, 26 deaths Tuesday

EDMONTON, AB– Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Tuesday, detailing statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

843 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 106,378. Of those, 13,411 cases are active while 91,799 people have recovered.

Approximately 75 per cent of the new cases came from the Edmonton and Calgary Zones who saw 340 and 291 positive tests respectively.

Meanwhile, in the South Zone, 22 people contracted the virus including seven in Lethbridge.

Active cases both regionally and locally have fallen to 257 and 77 respectively.

Since yesterday’s update, another 26 Albertans have died from COVID including 11 in the Calgary Zone, 10 in the Edmonton Zone, three in the North Zone, and one each in the South and Central Zones. The person from the South Zone was a man in his 60’s from South Lethbridge.

To date, the virus has claimed the lives of 1,168 people in the province.

Provincially, 919 patients are currently hospitalized and 140 have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 10,301 tests conducted in the past 24 hours, there have now been 2,857,374 tests conducted on 1,671,264 different people.

As of the end of Monday, January 4, AHS confirmed that 26,269 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered.

The provincial breakdown by health zone is as follows:

  • Edmonton Zone – 45,652 cases, 5,794 active
    • 617 deaths (10 new)
    • 495 in hospital, 68 in ICU
  • Calgary Zone – 40,670 cases, 4,545 active
    • 368 deaths (11 new)
    • 243 in hospital, 49 in ICU
  • North Zone – 7,484 cases, 1,311 active
    • 72 deaths (three new)
    • 63 in hospital, five in ICU
  • Central Zone – 7,142 cases, 1,431 active
    • 48 deaths (one new)
    • 99 in hospital, 16 in ICU
  • South Zone – 5,119 cases, 257 active
    • 63 deaths (one new)
    • 19 in hospital, two in ICU

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,351 cases (one new), 12 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 1,447 cases (seven new), 77 active, nine deaths (one new)
    • West Lethbridge – 529 cases (three new), 25 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 472 cases (two new), 33 active, five deaths (one new)
    • North Lethbridge – 446 cases (two new), 19 active, two deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 477 cases (three new), 48 active, nine deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 451 cases (four new), 33 active, seven deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 317 cases, 15 active, six deaths
  • Cardston County – 290 cases (two new), 30 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 144 cases, one active, two deaths
  • County of Newell – 143 cases (four new), six active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 143 cases, five active, zero deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 114 cases, one active, two deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 116 cases (one new), 17 active, three deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 69 cases, two active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 13 cases, two active, zero deaths
