AHS reports 1,123 new COVID cases, 25 deaths Wednesday

EDMONTON, AB– Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Wednesday, detailing statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

1,123 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 107,501. Of those, 13,450 cases are active while 92,858 people have recovered.

Approximately 76 per cent of the new cases came from the Edmonton and Calgary Zones who saw 431 and 424 positive tests respectively.

Meanwhile, in the South Zone, 27 people contracted the virus with 10 of those in Lethbridge.

Active cases in the region fell to 235 but rose slightly in Lethbridge to 82.

Since yesterday’s update, 25 Albertans died from COVID including 16 in the Edmonton Zone, seven in the Calgary Zone, and one each in the Central and North Zones. To date, the virus has claimed the lives of 1,193.

Provincially, 911 patients are currently hospitalized and 141 have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 16,127 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 2,873,566 tests done on 1,675,677 different people.

As of Wednesday, January 5, AHS says 30,033 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered.

The provincial breakdown by health zone is as follows:

  • Edmonton Zone – 46,073 cases, 5,673 active
    • 633 deaths (16 new)
    • 479 in hospital, 64 in ICU
  • Calgary Zone – 41,094 cases, 4,706 active
    • 375 deaths (seven new)
    • 254 in hospital, 50 in ICU
  • North Zone – 7,701 cases, 1,317 active
    • 73 deaths (one new)
    • 63 in hospital, seven in ICU
  • Central Zone – 7,266 cases, 1,418 active
    • 49 deaths (one new)
    • 97 in hospital, 17 in ICU
  • South Zone – 5,146 cases, 235 active
    • 63 deaths
    • 18 in hospital, three in ICU

The breakdown for the South Health Zone by community is as follows:

  • Brooks – 1,353 cases (two new), 12 active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 1,457 cases (10 new), 82 active, nine deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 534 cases (five new), 27 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 475 cases (three new), 35 active, five deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 448 cases (two new), 20 active, two deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 479 cases (two new), 37 active, nine deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 457 cases (six new), 37 active, seven deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 318 cases (one new), 15 active, six deaths
  • Cardston County – 294 cases (four new), 28 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 146 cases (two new), three active, two deaths
  • County of Newell – 143 cases, six active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 143 cases, five active, zero deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 117 cases (one new), 18 active, three deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 114 cases, one active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 69 cases, two active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 13 cases, two active, zero deaths
