Alberta schools to resume in-person learning Jan. 11

EDMONTON, AB– Students can indeed head back into schools next week.

Premier Jason Kenney said back in November that all students would soon be moving to online, at-home learning on an interim basis.

He announced Thursday that the original plan to resume in-person classes on Monday, January 11 will indeed happen. Students can still take part in online classes if they prefer.

“I want to recognize the effort of school staff, teachers and parents to follow health measures and help us keep classrooms safe for Alberta students. I’m confident this effort will continue and we’ll see a successful return to in-person learning to the benefit of all students.”

From September to November, Kenney claims that only 0.4 per cent of school students and staff had tested positive for COVID-19.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw adds that, among those who had contracted the virus, only six per cent of cases came from in-school transmission.

“In September, the vast majority of parents chose in-person learning for their children during the pandemic and schools have been diligently following the extensive health measures in place,” says Education Minister Adriana LaGrange. “A return to school will provide our students with the familiar daily routine of learning in class and will restore some sense of normalcy for both students and families amidst these unusual times.”

The Lethbridge School Division also announced Thursday that the “pivot” date for elementary and middle schools that allows students to switch between online and in-person learning has been delayed to February 22.
