Year-end review: Lethbridge County Reeve Lorne Hickey

Jan 7, 2021 | 5:00 AM

LETHBRIDGE COUNTY, AB– Lethbridge County Reeve Lorne Hickey, gave his thoughts about how 2020 went for the area.

Hickey noted that even through the pandemic, the Lethbridge County area was able to maintain some normality.

It was a “challenging year” for staff and Hickey, due to the office being closed at times and community members having to switch to online formats.

Many conversations stirred up about the Mandatory Mask bylaw in the county with many opposing the law.

All conventions that Hickey would normally go to, were virtual this year and he said the change of face-to-face contact is something he surely misses.

Talking to community members in person is something Hickey says is a big part of his job as well and not having that is quite disappointing.

This past year for agriculture was quite successful Hickey says, and agriculture provided a lot for the community even in a tough time like a pandemic.

Grain farmers had a good year according to Hickey with the prices maintaining a reasonable status and the yields that they got were “unexpected”.

The county’s roads and bridges are a top priority moving forward, Hickey says, looking forward to a long 2021 ahead for Lethbridge County.

Overall, Hickey believes Lethbridge County has handled the pandemic as well as they could have but hopes even more supports are provided for 2021 and that Alberta communities are prepared for the upcoming year.
