31-year-old man killed in mountain climbing accident in Crowsnest Pass

CROWSNEST PASS, AB – Crowsnest Pass RCMP are investigating a mountain climbing fatality from this past weekend.

At 6:30 pm on Saturday, January 9, RCMP received a Garmin SPOT emergency activation on a mountainous area known as “the chutes.”

They were joined by Crowsnest Pass Fire and Rescue as well as Pincher Creek Search and Rescue to try to find the person.

A team of 10 members searched the area, but due to high winds, darkness, and the potential for avalanches, they were forced to turn back.

The following day, Kananaskis Country Public Safety aided the team with their alpine and long-line rescue capabilities and eventually found the person.

A 31-year-old man had been climbing alone and was found deceased.

“It is believed that the rugged terrain, as well as environmental conditions of ice, wind and snow, contributed to the incident,” reads a press release from Crowsnest Pass RCMP.

The name of the deceased will not be released and RCMP does not expect to provide any further updates.
