LPS charges man with robbery & shop breaking

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A man has been arrested in connection to two incidents involving Lethbridge businesses.

Lethbridge Police responded to a security alarm at a business on the 300 block of 5 Street South at approximately 1:00 on Monday, January 18. A door was broken and slightly open but no one was inside.

About half an hour later, LPS was called to a robbery on the 500 block of 13 Street North.

According to police, a man walked behind the counter and struck the clerk several times before grabbing cigarettes and leaving.

Derek Orrin Smith, 30, of no fixed address, was found a short time later and charged for both incidents.

Charges include robbery, shop breaking to commit theft, failure to comply with a probation order, and failure to comply with an undertaking.

Smith remains in custody while awaiting a bail hearing.
