Lethbridge Police promoting intersection safety this month

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Police in Lethbridge are raising awareness on the importance of intersection safety this month.

LPS noted that on average, 64 people die, and another 8,044 people are hurt in collisions at intersections in Alberta each year. Police say some of the most common mistakes drivers make are:

  • Following other drivers too closely
  • Making unsafe left turns
  • Disregarding stop signs
  • Running red lights

LPS stated that many of these infractions occur at intersections.

“When excessive speed is added into the mix, the likelihood of a collision increases,” LPS said in a release.

“Given the potentially devastating impact of such traffic infractions, police have a low tolerance for those which occur at intersections. Unfortunately, it is neither feasible nor practical to post a police officer at every major intersection. This is where intersection safety devices more commonly known as red light and speed-on-green cameras come into play.”

LPS said devices such as those have proven to be effective in reducing collisions and casualties by getting drivers to reduce their speed and stop for red lights.

“When conventional enforcement is not an option, these devices are a tool to help make the roads safer for everyone.”

The Lethbridge Police Service has provided some tips to stay safe while driving through intersections:

  • Always look before moving through an intersection and watch for pedestrians.
  • Leave an abundance of room between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
  • Ensure it is safe to turn left before making the turn.
  • Ensure you come to a complete stop at red lights and stop signs.
  • Adjust your driving for the road conditions.

LPS said making roads safer is a team job and not the sole responsibility of police officers.

“The onus is on all users of the road to be diligent and ensure they are taking time to make smart decisions and follow the rules of the road.”
