Taber – renewal and diversification on a solid foundation

Jan 19, 2021 | 1:02 PM

TABER, AB. — When you say the name ‘Taber,’ the comments that usually follow are “Oh, the best corn or, the area that grows potatoes for all the French Fries.” And, when fall comes around, it’s the sugar beets that make their mark, along with harvest of a variety of produce.

Agriculture has been the cornerstone of Taber’s economy for decades and many local businesses depend on the stability that industry provides.

The Chamber of Commerce, along with Chinook Community Futures has a shared mission to support all local job creators and drivers of the economy to grow into the future. Taking a few action items out of the Regional Economic Development Strategy – these groups have partnered in the development of the Taber Chamber Community Business Hub; a one stop shop for local business support.

Taber’s Business Hub aims to be the physical embodiment of the ” building of an entrepreneurial system that nurtures growth, through knowledge-sharing, to build a stronger more diversified economy.” There is a vision to see area communities animated and proud of where they live, by ensuring attributes that are inviting for businesses, residents and tourists – all essential to growing a regional economy.

The ‘How’ element, is to target beautification and enhancement programming, to retain and attract talent, businesses and families by offering tangible benefits that make each community unique.

As an important first step, there is a new logo for the Chamber of Commerce!

Chamber Bucks is currency which has the value of cash and is redeemable at any local business (not just Chamber members) additional information can be found at www.taberchamber.ca.

There will be a new home for the Chamber of Commerce as well as the Community Futures to showcase the region and regional assets. Ground-breaking for the new building took place on August, 29, 2020. Building construction is expected to begin in the Spring of 2021, with completion by year end. Construction of the facility is 100% funded through a partnership between the Town of Taber and the Taber Chamber.

It may seem like a lot of work in a short time, however, development of this building has been “in the making” for more than 10 years.

The vision doesn’t end here! The Chamber and Community Futures have other programs they are preparing. We’ll keep you updated on what comes next. Make sure to watch here for updated progress and new information.
