Chinook Regional Hospital getting new morgue to replace aging one

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Renovations are now underway for planned upgrades to the morgue in Lethbridge’s hospital.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) says the current refrigerated unit in the morgue was built in 1988, “and aging equipment was becoming increasingly difficult to repair as some replacement parts are no longer available.”

Planning for this began in late 2019 and is therefore not related to AHS’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These facility upgrades are among several going on across South Zone, as AHS works to ensure our patients have the highest level of care possible and our staff have the proper equipment to safely and efficiently do their jobs.”

Following preliminary work in December, full construction began in January.

Until construction is completed, there will be a temporary, climate-controlled trailer at the hospital.

AHS expects the new morgue to be finished by the spring.
