Kenney calls Keystone XL cancellation “a gut punch”

EDMONTON, AB– Premier Jason Kenney spoke on U.S. President Joe Biden’s decision to cancel the Keystone XL Pipeline.

Kenney says it’s a “gut punch” from Biden adding “that’s not how you treat an ally.”

Today, Biden was inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States and as his first act as president, Biden cancelled the project.

According to Kenney, 71 per cent of American voters were in support of the construction of Keystone XL, including many from the Democratic party.

Kenney wants Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to have conversations with Biden to try to change his mind on the project.

The argument given by Kenney is that Biden didn’t even have a conversation with Canadian officials about the cancellations and called it an “attack” to Canada.

He believes the only way to work through this problem with both countries is to have a “level-headed conversation.”

Kenney says job loss because of the pandemic has already been massive, and this decision will add to those numbers.

“Over 2000 women and men have lost their jobs or heading home from good-paying union jobs as a result of this decision, my thoughts go to every one of them as they cope with the distressing consequences of today’s decision.”

Kenney believes it’s in Justin Trudeau’s hands now for what happens with the project moving forward.
