Another 13 Covid deaths in the province – but, new cases inch downward

LETHBRIDGE, AB. — Alberta Health Services has released the COVID-19 report for cases to the end of Jan. 22, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

573 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 120,330. Of those, 9,277 cases are active while 109,330 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, 39 people tested positive including 13 in the M.D. of Pincher Creek, 11 in Cardston County, and seven in Lethbridge.

Active infections rose across the province but at a reduced rate.

Since yesterday’s update, 13 Albertans have died from COVID including four in the Edmonton Zone, three in the Calgary zone, two in the Central Zone, and four in the North Zone. To date, the virus has claimed 1,525 lives.

Provincially, the overall number of people hospitalized has dropped by 15 to 676 patients and 114 patients are in intensive care.

With another 10,894 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,090,223 tests completed on 1,732,882 different people.

Below is a breakdown of cases per health zone:

  • Edmonton Zone – 50,264 cases, 3,407 active
    • 314 in hospital, 43 in ICU
    • 792 deaths (four new)
  • Calgary Zone – 46,108 cases, 3,786 active
    • 206 in hospital, 49 in ICU
    • 487 deaths (three new)
  • North Zone – 9,667 cases, 1,325 active
    • 74 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 96 deaths (four new)
  • Central Zone – 8,486 cases, 799 active
    • 53 in hospital, 8 in ICU
    • 82 deaths (two new)
  • South Zone – 5,671 cases, 396 active
    • 29 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 68 deaths

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Brooks – 1,362 cases, six active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 1,625 cases (eleven new), 124 active, 11 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 586 cases (two new), 39 active, two deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 554 cases (nine new), 61 active, eight deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 487 cases, 24 active, one death
  • Medicine Hat – 523 cases (one new), 30 active, 12 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 499 cases (four new), 31 active, seven deaths
  • Cardston-Kainai – 429 cases (one new), 107 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 328 cases, 8 active, six deaths
  • County of Warner – 157 cases, eight active, two deaths
  • County of Newell – 1519 cases, 17 active, two deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 166 cases, 42 active, three deaths
  • Cypress County – 144 cases, one active, zero deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 117 cases, one active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 91 cases (one new), 19 active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 18 cases, six active, zero deaths
