TABER, AB – A 36-year-old Coaldale man faces multiple charges following a stressful incident over the weekend.

On Saturday, January 23 at around 8:50 p.m., Taber Police received a call from a “frantic female” who stated she had been held against her will.

The investigation found that the woman met up with a man, who she knew, and entered his vehicle. Police say once the woman was in the vehicle, the man drove off and began “ranting suicidal thoughts”.

The man reportedly took out a handgun, threatened to harm himself and threated to crash the vehicle.

Police say the woman convinced him to stop at a convenience store, where she was able to escape.

With the help of Coaldale RCMP, 36-year-old Daniel Robert Conine was arrested. He is charged with forcible confinement, uttering threats, as well as Traffic Safety Act matters.

He has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Taber court today, January 26.

Police added that the handgun was recovered and determined to be a replica BB handgun.

Further charges are pending as the investigation continues.
