Alberta’s new COVID-19 case rate slows, while variant rate inches upward

EDMONTON, AB. — Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 on Sunday, covering statistics compiled over the previous 24 hours.

328 new cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 131,735. Of those, 4,758 cases are active while 124,478 people have recovered.

While new cases continue, the rate of increase has slowed and 79 per cent of all COVID-19 cases are located in the Edmonton and Calgary zones.

In the South Zone, there are 18 new cases, including six in Lethbridge.

Since yesterday’s update, another nine Albertans have died from COVID-19 – one in the north zone, three in the Edmonton zone and the remainder in Calgary. To date, the virus has claimed the lives of 1,827 people in the province.

Provincially, 321 patients are currently hospitalized including 53 who are in intensive care.

With another 9,541 tests completed over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,356,719 tests conducted on 1,804,455 different people.

169,411 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of the end of February 20.

AHS has confirmed that 278 cases of COVID-19 variants have been confirmed in the province to date. None have been found in the South or North Zones.

Breakdown of cases per provincial health zone as of day end Feb. 20:

Edmonton Zone – 53,139 cases, 1,115 active

  • 98 in hospital, 16 in ICU
  • 942 deaths (three new)

Calgary Zone – 50,256 cases, 1,669 active

  • 115 in hospital, 18 in ICU
  • 566 deaths (five new)

North Zone – 11,323 cases, 865 active

  • 46 in hospital, one in ICU
  • 131 deaths (one new)

Central Zone – 9,897 cases, 335 active

  • 32 in hospital, eight in ICU
  • 103 deaths

South Zone – 6,358 cases, 335 active

  • 30 in hospital, ten in ICU
  • 85 deaths

Brooks – 1,364 cases, zero active, 14 deaths

Lethbridge – 1,997 cases (six new), 205 active, 20 deaths

  • West Lethbridge – 686 cases, 53 active, two deaths
  • South Lethbridge – 682 cases (two new), 58 active, 16 deaths
  • North Lethbridge – 628 cases (four new), 94 active, two deaths

Cardston County – 579 cases (six new), 63 active, 10 deaths

Medicine Hat – 552 cases (five new), 23 active, 14 deaths

Lethbridge County – 533 cases, 15 active, seven deaths

M.D. of Taber – 336 cases, four active, six deaths

M.D. of Pincher Creek – 217 cases, 19 active, four deaths

County of Warner – 161 cases, three active, two deaths

County of Newell – 158 cases, zero active, two deaths

Cypress County – 146 cases, two active, zero deaths

County of Forty Mile – 117 cases, zero active, two deaths

Fort Macleod – 96 cases (one new), one active, four deaths

Crowsnest Pass – 24 cases, zero active, zero deaths
