Lethbridge City Council extends mask bylaw to April 30

Feb 23, 2021 | 6:31 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB– Previously, the Community Standing Policy Committee decided that the best thing for Lethbridge City Council should not extend the current mask bylaw in the city.

The mask mandate was first introduced on August 24, 2020, and was set to be in effect until December 31, 2020. In November, it was extended until February 23, 2021.

At Tuesday’s Lethbridge City Council meeting, the motion came back to councillors on what to do with the city-wide mask mandate.

Council chose to shoot down the motion of letting the mandate run out, so councillor Rob Miyashiro proposed his motion to extend the bylaw until December 2021, and that was passed.

In the previous meeting, the following three options were presented to be chosen:

  1. Not extend the bylaw
  2. Extend it in its current state until the end of December 2021
  3. Extend the bylaw to the end of December with “revisions” to allow for extra resources to go to enforcement personnel

The committee chose the first option, to let the bylaw run out.

Even though city council chose to extend the mandate, the provincial mask mandate is still in effect, so nothing would change if council voted to let the bylaw run out.

After speaking to Robin Harper, GM of Recreation and Culture with the city, he added no mask compliance tickets have been handed out and compliance has steadily continued to grow over the pandemic.

The mask bylaw in Lethbridge will be in effect until April 30, 2021.
