31 new COVID cases in South Zone, two deaths

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Wednesday, covering statistics compiled over the previous 24 hours.

402 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total 134,454. Of those, 4,649 cases are active while 127,903 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, 31 residents tested positive including 27 from Lethbridge.

Active infections in the city are up by eight while remaining relatively flat regionally.

Since yesterday’s update, 12 Albertans died from COVID including six from the Calgary Zone, and two each in the South, Edmonton, and North Zones. To date, 1,902 Albertans have died from COVID.

The deaths in the South Zone are for people from Cardston County and the M.D. of Pincher Creek.

One was for a woman in her 50’s and the other was a woman in her 80’s. AHS did not specify which person was from which community.

Both deaths in the region included comorbidities but neither were linked to any outbreaks.

Provincially, 251 patients are currently hospitalized including 48 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 10,362 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,434,559 tests completed on 1,826,785 different people.

255,283 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of the end of March 2. Approximately 89,000 people have received two doses.

16 new cases of COVID-19 variants have been found in the province since yesterday’s update. None are in the South Zone.

Below is a breakdown of cases per regional health zone:

  • Edmonton Zone – 53,985 cases, 1,054 active
    • 76 in hospital, 15 in ICU
    • 972 deaths (two deaths)
  • Calgary Zone – 51,446 cases, 1,622 active
    • 90 in hospital, 15 in ICU
    • 587 deaths (six new)
  • North Zone – 12,073 cases, 1,039 active
    • 25 in hospital, one in ICU
    • 139 deaths (two new)
  • Central Zone – 10,254 cases, 590 active
    • 32 in hospital, 11 in ICU
    • 112 deaths
  • South Zone – 6,589 cases, 331 active
    • 25 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 92 deaths (two new)

  • Brooks – 1,362 cases, one active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 2,181 cases (27 new), 218 active, 20 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 740 cases (six new), 66 active, 16 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 729 cases (nine new), 52 active, two deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 711 cases (12 new), 100 active, two deaths
  • Cardston County – 616 cases (one new), 62 active, 12 deaths (one new)
  • Medicine Hat – 557 cases (one new), 20 active, 17 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 547 cases, 15 active, seven deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 340 cases, five active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 218 cases (one new), three active, five deaths (one new)
  • County of Warner – 162 cases, zero active, three deaths
  • County of Newell – 160 cases (one new), one active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 145 cases, one active, zero deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 117 cases, zero active, two deaths
