Spring convocation at U of L will again be all-digital

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Another crop of soon-to-be graduates at the University of Lethbridge will take part in an online convocation ceremony.

While the province looks to gradually reopen more parts of society, large public gatherings are still not allowed and will likely continue to not be allowed for some time.

This means the traditional in-person day of celebration will not take place this term.

“This is certainly not the way we want to celebrate Convocation. We love the in-person experience, the ability to personally congratulate each student as they walk the stage, to feel the emotion in the building, and to see the support of our graduates’ friends and families as they take this momentous step forward in their lives,” says Mike Mahon, U of L President and Vice-Chancellor.

The U of L now looks to hold its third virtual celebration.

In June, graduating students will receive a special package from the university with ceremonial items like their cap, tassel, and parchment. For those graduating with distinction or great distinction, they will also get honour cords.

“I know our working groups will do their absolute best to make Spring 2021 Convocation a momentous occasion for our graduates and their families,” adds Charles Weaselhead, the University’s Chancellor.

“We also want to reiterate the invitation remains open for three years after in-person celebrations resume, all of our graduates are welcome to return to campus and participate in convocation so we can personally congratulate them on their achievement.”

A celebration video will be shared with all graduates while the U of L’s social media accounts will highlight the achievements of the spring class.

Students will be encouraged to use the hashtags #ulethgrad2021 and #ulethalumni
