21 new COVID cases in Lethbridge as city faces six outbreaks

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Friday, covering statistics compiled over the previous 24 hours.

411 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 135,196. Of those, 4,639 cases are active while 128,644 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, 26 people tested positive including 21 in Lethbridge.

Active infections in the city rose by 16 but fell by 15 regionally.

Part of why Lethbridge’s cases have been rising in recent weeks is due to a series of outbreaks at six different facilities.

The latest updates were provided to LNN by AHS:

  • Chinook Regional Hospital – one case
    • For acute care facilities, AHS lists these as outbreaks even if there is just one case
  • Edith Cavell Care Centre – five cases (four active, one recovered)
  • Quest Support group home – five cases (one active, four recovered)
  • The View at Lethbridge – 92 cases (two active, 84 recovered, 6 deaths)
  • Haul All Equipment – 14 cases (one active, 13 recovered)
  • Lethbridge Alpha House – 78 cases (four active, 73 recovered, one death)

Since yesterday’s update, two Albertans died from COVID with one each in the Calgary and Edmonton Zones.

Provincially, 243 patients are currently hospitalized including 44 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 10,599 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,454,639 tests completed on 1,832,143 different people.

275,719 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of the end of March 4.

AHS also confirmed 22 cases of COVID variants, bringing the total to 553. None to date have been in the South Zone.

  • Edmonton Zone – 54,173 cases, 1,101 active
    • 77 in hospital, 14 in ICU
    • 975 deaths (one new)
  • Calgary Zone – 51,722 cases, 1,654 active
    • 77 in hospital, 14 in ICU
    • 591 deaths (one new)
  • North Zone – 12,226 cases, 1,005 active
    • 29 in hospital, one in ICU
    • 140 deaths
  • Central Zone – 10,333 cases, 527 active
    • 35 in hospital, nine in ICU
    • 115 deaths
  • South Zone – 6,638 cases, 341 active
    • 29 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 92 deaths

  • Brooks – 1,362 cases, one active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 2,220 cases (21 new), 239 active, 20 deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 744 cases (two new), 66 active, 16 deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 739 cases (five new), 58 active, two deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 736 cases (14 new), 115 active, two deaths
  • Cardston County – 621 cases (two new), 52 active, 12 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 558 cases (one new), 17 active, 17 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 549 cases, 16 active, seven deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 340 cases, four active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 218 cases, three active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 163 cases (one new), one active, three deaths
  • County of Newell – 160 cases, one active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 145 cases, one active, zero deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 117 cases, zero active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 101 cases, five active, four deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 24 cases, zero active, zero deaths
