AHS provides two days of COVID updates after weekend delay

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Sunday and Monday, covering statistics compiled over the previous two days.

LNN reported on Sunday that AHS was conducting system upgrades, which caused a delay in their abilities to update its COVID numbers.

Sunday’s report includes 304 new COVID cases across the province while another 278 were confirmed Monday, bringing the total to 136,119. Of those, 4,633 cases are active while 129,566 people have recovered.

All of the following numbers represent two days of reporting.

In the South Zone, 67 people tested positive including 57 in Lethbridge.

Active infections in the city rose by 19, and regionally, by 14.

Over the past two days, six Albertans died from COVID including three in the South Zone, two in the Edmonton Zone, and one in the Calgary Zone. To date, 1,920 Albertans have died from the virus.

All three deaths in the South Zone were for residents of Lethbridge. LNN has reached out to AHS to learn more, including if any of them were connected to outbreaks.

Provincially, 254 patients are currently hospitalized including 36 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 13,571 tests conducted over the last two days, there has now been a total of 3,476,408 tests have been completed on 1,838,785 different people.

297,692 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of the end of March 7.

In the last two days, AHS confirmed 57 cases of the U.K. variant of COVID-19 in Alberta and three of the South African variant.

Five of the U.K. variant cases are in the South Zone, which is the first time that either alternate strain of the virus has entered the region.

Below is a breakdown of cases per regional health zone:

  • Edmonton Zone – 54,410 cases, 1,119 active
    • 74 in hospital, 12 in ICU
    • 978 deaths (two new)
  • Calgary Zone – 52,035 cases, 1,608 active
    • 86 in hospital, 12 in ICU
    • 592 deaths (one new)
  • North Zone – 12,415 cases, 960 active
    • 32 in hospital, one in ICU
    • 140 deaths
  • Central Zone – 10,406 cases, 491 active
    • 31 in hospital, six in ICU
    • 115 deaths
  • South Zone – 6,744 cases, 367 active
    • 31 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 95 deaths (three new)

Below is a breakdown of cases in the South Health Zone:

  • Brooks – 1,363 cases (one new), one active, 14 deaths
  • Lethbridge – 2,309 cases (57 new), 278 active, 23 deaths (three new)
    • South Lethbridge – 765 cases (10 new), 69 active, 18 deaths (two new)
    • West Lethbridge – 773 cases (23 new), 85 active, two deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 770 cases (24 new), 124 active, three deaths (one new)
  • Cardston County – 633 cases (seven new), 45 active, 12 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 559 cases, 11 active, 17 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 550 cases (one new), 16 active, seven deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 341 cases (one new), four active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 218 cases, three active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 162 cases, zero active, three deaths
  • County of Newell – 160 cases, one active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 145 cases, zero active, zero deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 118 cases (one new), one active, two deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 103 cases (one new), six active, four deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 24 cases, zero active, zero deaths
