Kainai, Siksika Nations say Alberta coal project reviews inadequate, seek federal involvement

EDMONTON – Two of southern Alberta’s largest First Nations want Ottawa to help review a proposed coal mine in the Rocky Mountains.

The Siksika and Kainai say Alberta’s plan to consider the environmental impact of Montem Resource’s Tent Mountain project in the Crowsnest Pass is too weak.

They say the Australian-based company skirted a production threshold that would automatically bring Ottawa into the review.

The First Nations point out that Montem’s site would be right beside a number of other proposed mines, but Alberta isn’t planning to consider the cumulative impacts.

Both believe the mine would prevent them from their constitutional treaty rights to practise their traditional way of life.

They argue the federal government needs to step in to protect the interests of British Columbia and Saskatchewan as well.

The mine would straddle the Alberta-B. C. boundary and water from the area flows into Saskatchewan.
