South Zone sees 31 new COVID cases, two deaths

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Tuesday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

255 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 136,374. Of those, 4,470 cases are active while 129,978 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, 31 people tested positive including 24 in Lethbridge.

While active infections remained flat regionally, they rose by six in the city.

Since yesterday’s update, six Albertans died from COVID including two each in the South and Edmonton Zones and one each in the Calgary and Central Zones. To date, 1,926 Albertans have died from the virus.

The deaths in the South Zone were for residents of South Lethbridge and Cardston County.

For the person from Lethbridge, AHS has confirmed to LNN that it was a man in his 80’s. His death is linked to the outbreak at the Edith Cavell Care Centre.

The other death was for a man in his 80’s from Cardston County. His death is linked to the outbreak at the Cardston Health Centre.

Both patients had comorbidities.

Provincially, 263 patients are currently hospitalized including 37 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 5,434 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,481,853 tests completed on 1,840,457 different people.

303,823 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered as of the end of March 8.

Starting March 10, more Albertans will be able to book vaccination appointments for the shots from Astra Zeneca.

28 new cases of the U.K. COVID-19 variant were confirmed today including an additional two in the South Zone.

  • Edmonton Zone – 54,496 cases, 1,182 active
    • 76 in hospital, 12 in ICU
    • 980 deaths (two new)
  • Calgary Zone – 52,129 cases, 1,594 active
    • 89 in hospital, 13 in ICU
    • 593 deaths (one new)
  • North Zone – 12,442 cases, 876 active
    • 33 in hospital, one in ICU
    • 140 deaths
  • Central Zone – 10,428 cases, 440 active
    • 31 in hospital, seven in ICU
    • 116 deaths (one new)
  • South Zone – 6,775 cases, 368 active
    • 34 in hospital, four in ICU
    • 97 deaths (two new)

  • Cardston County – 636 cases (three new), 45 active, 13 deaths (one new)
  • Medicine Hat – 559 cases, 10 active, 17 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 552 cases (two new), 11 active, seven deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 341 cases, four active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 219 cases (one new), four active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 162 cases, zero active, three deaths
