Five LPS employees suspended with pay during internal investigation

LETHBRIDGE, AB– An internal investigation has been launched into five Lethbridge Police Service employees.

“Five employees have been suspended with pay pending a professional misconduct hearing, which falls under the Police Service Regulation and Police Act,” LPS says.

LNN reached out to LPS for clarification of what the investigation is referring to, but they cannot say at the moment.

LPS confirmed this investigation is not about the allegations of LPS officers spying on Lethbridge-West MLA Shannon Phillips.

LPS says this is a matter that has not been in the public’s eye as well as it has not been posted on any media outlets.

“To protect the integrity of the hearing process, we cannot discuss the names of those being investigated or the nature of any evidence before it is introduced at the hearing,” the LPS release says.

“The particulars of the hearing will be posted to the Lethbridge Police website in due course.”

“The 2018 incident was referred to an outside agency for investigation.”

“Lethbridge Police received the findings of the investigation in late December 2020, and have been reviewing the matter and ensuring the proper processes are in place moving forward. Outside legal counsel has been retained to prosecute the misconduct charges,” the release reads.

“Any disciplinary sanctions will be pending the outcome of that hearing process.”

Police say they will not speak further on the investigation as of right now, but will be able to comment at a later date.
