Lethbridge County spring road bans now in effect

Mar 15, 2021 | 9:18 AM

LETHBRIDGE COUNTY, AB – As of this morning (March 15), Lethbridge County is implementing seasonal road bans on paved and hard top roads.

The county says the goal is to ‘maintain the integrity of the infrastructure’ of roads. Officials are advising businesses and citizens of affected routes and maximum allowable weights.

A full list of banned roads is available to see at Lethbridge County’s website.

Most hard-top roads will be banned to 75 per cent load as defined in the Alberta Commercial Vehicle Dimension and Weight Regulation. All gravel roads will remain at 100 per cent.

Gravel roads and haul routes will be monitored as the spring season moves along.

Operators who hold road use permits under Lethbridge County Policy 352 should be aware that seasonal bans are in place and supersede the unrestricted loading as detailed in their permit.

Any operators who are located on banned roads and exporting products out of Canada can apply for exemption under an Export Permit by contacting Lethbridge County’s office in Picture Butte at 403-732-5333.

The province and surrounding municipalities implement road bans to maintain an acceptable and safe level of service and reduce the amount of damage caused by loads during periods when the road is most susceptible to excess deterioration.

The county noted that damage to roads is costly to fix and placing bans on vulnerable roads helps to keep maintenance costs down.

Provincial highways are managed and banned accordingly by Alberta Transportation. More details can be found here.
