AHS reports 100th COVID death in South Zone

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Tuesday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

355 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 139,143. Of those, 4,776 cases are active while 132,415 people have recovered.

In the South Zone, 53 people tested positive including 36 in Lethbridge and 11 in Cardston County.

Active infections in Lethbridge increased by nine and regionally by 13.

Since yesterday’s update, three Albertans died from COVID including one each in the South, Calgary, and Edmonton Zones. To date, 1,952 Albertans have died as a result of the virus.

This also marks the 100th death in the South Zone. AHS reported that a woman in her 90’s from West Lethbridge died.

LNN has also contacted AHS to get updates on numbers for 11 outbreaks of COVID-19 in the South Zone. That will be updated here once the statistics are sent to us.

Provincially, 260 patients are currently hospitalized including 44 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 6,018 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,542,314 tests completed on 1,857,765 different people.

379,882 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of the end of March 15.

Starting at 8:00 am on Wednesday, March 17, more Albertans will become eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

This includes:

  • All Albertans born in 1949-1951 or earlier
  • First Nations, Metis, and Inuit people born in 1964-1966 or earlier

Since yesterday’s report, 62 cases of COVID-19 variants have been confirmed in Alberta including one in the South Zone.

  • Edmonton Zone – 55,072 cases, 1,114 active
    • 87 in hospital, 13 in ICU
    • 994 deaths (one new)
  • Calgary Zone – 53,203 cases, 1,824 active
    • 90 in hospital, 19 in ICU
    • 597 deaths (one new)
  • North Zone – 12,867 cases, 773 active
    • 27 in hospital, two in ICU
    • 141 deaths
  • Central Zone – 10,702 cases, 448 active
    • 28 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 120 deaths
  • South Zone – 7,186 cases, 601 active
    • 28 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 100 deaths (one new)

  • Lethbridge – 2,622 cases (36 new), 456 active, 26 deaths (one new)

    • West Lethbridge – 845 cases (11 new), 118 active, three deaths (one new)
  • Brooks – 1,365 cases, two active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 700 cases (11 new), 85 active, 13 deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 567 cases (one new), nine active, 17 deaths
  • Lethbridge County – 561 cases (two new), 14 active, seven deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 344 cases, five active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 234 cases, 17 active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 174 cases (two new), 12 active, three deaths
