Five Lethbridge playgrounds to be temporarily closed for resurfacing work

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Five playgrounds in Lethbridge will see temporary closures over the next few weeks due to construction.

The City of Lethbridge says work has begun on rubber resurfacing projects and the playgrounds affected will be fenced off during the construction period.

Below is a list of the current work schedule, weather and construction crew permitting:

The existing surfaces are mainly pea gravel, except for Henderson Park, which is already a rubber surface that has reached the end of its life cycle.

Once the surface has been removed, the new rubber plain is installed in two layers and left to cure for a couple of days.

Once that process is finished, the fencing will be removed, and the playground will re-open.

The City of Lethbridge noted that the new rubber surfacing will use Alberta-sourced recycled tires. The rubber surfacing is accessible, provides fall suppression and provides a “colorful, inviting element” to the playgrounds.

The city maintains 113 publicly available playgrounds across Lethbridge. A list of parks by neighborhood is available here.
