Lethbridge Legal Guidance offering free law advice as part of Ask-a-Lawyer event this weekend

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Anyone seeking legal advice who may not be able to afford it can take advantage of a free service by the Lethbridge Legal Guidance Society this weekend.

On Friday and Saturday (March 26 & 27), they’re hosting their bi-annual “Ask-a-Lawyer” event.

Members of the community can book a free, half-hour time slot to speak with a volunteer and obtain legal advice.

“Generally, our office has an income cap for people to access our services,” said Community Programs Manager Kathryn Linder.

“With this event, there is no income cap, so anybody can come and get that bit of information and advice.”

Linder noted that as of Tuesday morning (March 23), the Friday sessions are “pretty much booked”, but there are some slots available for Saturday, March 27. She said participants can ask questions about a variety of legal topics.

“Pretty much everything is on the table, depending on what we’ve got left with lawyers because not all of the lawyers handle all [of] the legal matters,” she told LNN.

“Through our clinic, our usual service, we do have some limitations on what legal matters people can address. At this event, that doesn’t occur the same way – it depends on which lawyers are available when people call.”

Pre-registration is required and can be done by calling 403-380-6338.

Pre-registration gives lawyers a chance to conduct a conflict check and make sure they’re abreast of the issue the client would like to discuss.

LAW DAY 2021

The Ask-a-Lawyer event, which is supported by Lethbridge Lawyers, is taking place in conjunction with Law Day 2021.

“Law Day [is] held province-wide. It’s actually later in April. We’re doing our event early because we’d like to get it off books before the Easter weekend, so we can have a nice break,” Linder said.

“Law Day is just an opportunity for various organizations to provide this kind of service across the province, to showcase their services and to make sure that people understand the accessibility of law.”

Linder said the Lethbridge Legal Guidance Society has been in operation since 2007.

For those that cannot make an appointment for this weekend’s event, Lethbridge Legal Guidance will host another Ask-a-Lawyer session in the fall, in conjunction with Access to Justice Week in September.
