Multiple grass fires across South-west Alberta shut down Highways and force evacuations

There are grass fires east of Highway 2, located between Stavely and Fort MacLeod.

Prepare for possible evacuation. Take all necessary precautions. Follow the directions of local authorities. Visibility will be affected. Avoid the area.

Elsewhere, Vulcan RCMP is assisting in the evacuation of Carmangay and remind motorists that Highway 520 east of Claresholm is still closed and drivers are to stay clear of Highway 23 between Barons and Carmangay.

Residents south of Champion are being evacuated. Residents in the affected area are asked to evacuate to the Village of Champion at the Champion Community Hall located at 106 2nd Street.

Avoid travelling in the area of the fire, there are multiple resources on scene please keep roadways clear and follow directions of emergency personnel.

Highway 2 south from Claresholm is now open

There is also a grass fire on the Blood Reserve and smoke is impacting west Lethbridge. Highway 509 is closed to traffic.

Residents of the Fort Whoop-Up area on the east end of the Blood Reserve have been evacuated. A temporary emergency shelter has been set up at the Multi-purpose building in Standoff.

As well, there is a grass fire at the MD of Willow Creek near the County’s Borders. Fire crews from several municipalities are working to control the fires.

Crews are also on-scene of a house fire at Ryerson Road West and Trent Road West.

Crews are currently dealing with multiple fires. This one is on Ryerson Road West and Trent Road West. Firefighters are asking the public to stay away from the area for the time being.
