Alberta temporarily pausing AstraZeneca vaccines for people under 55

Mar 29, 2021 | 2:36 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – As a precaution, some Albertans will be unable to get vaccinated against COVID-19 using the vaccine from AstraZeneca.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says concerns have been rising in recent weeks over “rare incidents” of blood clotting in patients in the U.K.

“While all available data and evidence shows no increase in the overall risk of blood clots for those who receive AstraZeneca, in a very small number of people who receive the vaccine, a blood clot was reported in the brain four-to-20 days after the vaccine.”

“These incidents are rare and seem to be linked to AstraZeneca, possible through an immune response. There is no evidence of any similar issues linked to the other vaccines that we are using in Alberta. There have also no reported cases of these blood clots following immunization in Alberta or anywhere in Canada.”

As a result, she announced Monday that they are temporarily pausing the use of this variety of vaccine for those who are under the age of 55. Albertans above this age threshold can still choose to get it once supply arrives.

It was not stated why this policy varies depending upon the person’s age.

“I want to assure you that anyone under the age of 55 who has already received a dose of AstraZeneca vaccine is not considered to be at high risk of blood clots, however, as with anyone who receives any medication, including vaccine, they should monitor their health and seek immediate medical attention if they experience medical concerns,” says Hinshaw.

The pause, however, will allow Health Canada to conduct a thorough investigation into the situation.

Doses from Moderna and Pfizer are still being administered.

The province also announced that Alberta will be moving to Phase 2B of the vaccination strategy later this week. More details in the link below:
