Province announces $6-million towards rural physician recruitment

The province is shelling out $6 million over three years to attract medical students to work in rural Alberta.

The money will go towards helping students with the cost of medical school in exchange for completing residency training in rural Alberta.

Students must also agree to practice in rural Alberta once they finish school.

The program will be administered by the Rural Health Professions Action Plan (RhPAP).

“We are pleased for this new program to get off the ground to get more doctors working in rural areas. Return of Service Agreements will give Albertans in rural and remote areas timelier access to a family doctor,” said Health Minister Tyler Shandro.

“With RhPAP’s decades of experience working in this area, they are perfect partners to manage this program.”

In total, the province said $90 million will be spent this year on rural physician recruitment and retention. Rural Health Professionals Action Plan funding will increase to $9 million with the additional $6 million investment.
