871 new COVID cases in Alberta, nearly half are variants

EDMONTON, AB– Alberta Health Services has released its update on COVID-19 for Wednesday, covering statistics compiled over the past 24 hours.

871 cases were confirmed across the province, bringing the total to 148,332. Of those, 8,350 cases are active while 137,992 people have recovered.

406 of today’s cases came from the various variants.

In the South Zone, 84 people tested positive including 48 in Lethbridge and 10 in Lethbridge County.

Active infections in the city rose by 25 and regionally by 39.

AHS provided the following update on COVID-19 outbreaks in the South Zone to LNN:

  • Acute care facilities
  • Long term care facilities
    • The Valleyview, Medicine Hat – 20 cases (17 recovered, three deaths)
  • Supportive living/home living sites
    • Grandview Village, Lethbridge – 26 cases (five active, 19 recovered, two deaths)
    • Martha’s House, Lethbridge – 21 cases (three active, 18 recovered)
    • St. Therese Villa, Lethbridge – two cases (one active, one recovered)
    • The View at Lethbridge – 93 cases (87 recovered, six deaths)
  • Other facilities and settings
    • Blackfoot Family Lodge Society, Lethbridge – seven cases (all recovered)
    • Kingdom Kids Christian Child Care, Lethbridge – seven cases (all active)
    • Lethbridge Alpha House – 86 cases (two active, 83 recovered, one death)
    • Sunrise Poultry Processors, Lethbridge – 94 cases (12 active, 82 recovered)
    • Trinity Reformed Church, Lethbridge – 18 cases (nine active, nine recovered)

Since yesterday’s update, three Albertans died from COVID including one each in the South, Edmonton, and North Zones. To date, 1,990 Albertans have lost their lives due to the virus.

The death in the South Zone was for a man in his 60’s from Cardston County. There are no known comorbidities.

Provincially, 301 patients are currently hospitalized including 63 who have been admitted to intensive care.

With another 13,739 tests conducted over the past day, there has now been a total of 3,706,367 tests completed on 1,906,035 different people.

634,997 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta as of the end of March 30.

Since yesterday’s report, 406 new variant cases have been confirmed in the province with 35 of those coming from the South Zone.

Below is a breakdown of cases per regional health zone:

  • Calgary Zone – 57,440 cases, 3,923 active
    • 112 in hospital, 31 in ICU
    • 604 deaths
  • Edmonton Zone – 57,070 cases, 1,844 active
    • 96 in hospital, 15 in ICU
    • 1,010 deaths (one new)
  • North Zone – 13,996 cases, 970 active
    • 27 in hospital, five in ICU
    • 148 deaths (one new)
  • Central Zone – 11,548 cases, 733 active
    • 33 in hospital, four in ICU
    • 122 deaths
  • South Zone – 8,136 cases, 854 active
    • 33 in hospital, eight in ICU
    • 106 deaths (one new)

  • Lethbridge – 3,186 cases (48 new), 516 active, 30 deaths
    • North Lethbridge – 1,131 cases (10 new), 203 active, six deaths
    • West Lethbridge – 1,054 cases (26 new), 193 active, three deaths
    • South Lethbridge – 1,001 cases (13 new), 120 active, 21 deaths
  • Brooks – 1,368 cases (one new), four active, 14 deaths
  • Cardston County – 798 cases (five new), 60 active, 14 deaths (one new)
  • Lethbridge County – 688 cases (10 new), 125 active, eight deaths
  • Medicine Hat – 589 cases (five new), 23 active, 17 deaths
  • M.D. of Taber – 403 cases (seven new), 57 active, six deaths
  • M.D. of Pincher Creek – 246 cases (two new), 13 active, five deaths
  • County of Warner – 179 cases, two active, three deaths
  • County of Newell – 162 cases, two active, two deaths
  • Cypress County – 153 cases (one new), seven active, zero deaths
  • Fort Macleod – 137 cases (three new), 23 active, four deaths
  • County of Forty Mile – 128 cases (two new), eight active, three deaths
  • Crowsnest Pass – 30 cases, six active, zero deaths
