Estimated 1,100 new COVID cases for Alberta, province only reporting preliminary data over holiday weekend

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Over the Easter long weekend, the province says it will only be reporting preliminary numbers of COVID-19 cases.

This comes after 875 new cases were reported during the Thursday, April 1 update.

AHS said Friday (April 2) that approximately 1,100 new cases were identified in the last 24 hours.

On April 1, 13,300 tests were completed, with an eight per cent positivity rate.

300 additional variant cases were reported, meaning that 33 per cent of all active cases in Alberta are variants of concern.

The province said hospitalizations continue to remain stable in the last 24 hours.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw noted that on April 1, 15,000 vaccine doses were administered, meaning 675,000 have been administered to date.

Preliminary data will be provided throughout the rest of the weekend, until Sunday. The complete data and online dashboard will be updated on Monday, April 5.

Case numbers for all health zones in the province, as well as local communities like Lethbridge, was not updated on Friday.

During Thursday’s update, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney asked that all Albertans celebrate the Easter holiday safely, following all health restrictions in place.

Kenney said the province is in the midst of a “significant new wave” of the pandemic.

Additionally, on Thursday, Alberta Health Services’ South Zone noted multiple cases of COVID-19 linked to two “house parties” in south Lethbridge in March. Officials are asking anyone who attended these events on March 13 and/or March 20 to book tests for COVID-19.
