Lethbridge’s Street Sweeping program to start April 12

Apr 3, 2021 | 8:05 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge’s streets are set to be swept this month.

The annual Street Sweeping program will begin on April 12th, weather permitting. A few changes from last year will still be in effect.

The campaign will begin on the west side of Lethbridge in the Paradise Canyon area, before moving to the north and ending on the south side of the city.

The area in Lethbridge where sweeping starts rotates every year.

This year, like 2020, there will be no paper door hanger reminders or windshield wiper notices, and no parking tickets. These changes were put in place and are continuing to support COVID-19 health measures.

Residents are still asked to do their part and move their vehicle before 7:30 a.m. on street sweeping days. Instead of relying on the traditional paper notifications, there will be an option to sign up for a personalized street sweeping notice by email, text or automated phone call through the city’s website.

Due to changes in weather, the final schedule is still being developed and notification sign-ups will be available soon.

Parking tickets will not be issued to vehicles that are not moved from the street. Instead, sweepers will work around vehicles parked on the street – but they will not go back to areas that are not swept.

Temporary ‘No Parking’ signs will be posted in a specific neighbourhood the day before street sweepers arrive.

Each spring season, crews clean thousands of tonnes of sand, dirt and other debris from approximately 550 kilometres of roads in Lethbridge. This helps prevent that material from washing into the Oldman River through the storm sewer system.

It also reduces dust in neighborhoods and makes streets safer for cycling, walking and driving. Street sweeping is scheduled so that it doesn’t conflict with garbage pickup.

The sand and debris picked up by street sweepers gets stored and cleaned and reconditioned sand is reused by mixing it into new sand for the following year’s sanding operation. Residual waste material is disposed of in the city’s landfill.
