Station 1 Hays was dispatched to the south end of the community by the Grand Forks at 2:18 p.m. on April 3.

“When units arrived on scene it was clear that the fire would hit the river banks,” the department said on social media.

The fire was extinguished and crews prevented it from spreading further than it could have.

As for the cause of the blaze, the department said the investigation found that it was a bird flying into a power pole.

“We would like to thank the hard work done by a large group of local farmers and ranchers who helped in the ground battle and tough terrain that was fought on foot,” the department said.

“As well thanks to Lariant Trucking for their water support as well to Canadian Natural for letting crews get water from their fresh water tank supply!”

All crew members were back at the station and ready for service at 7:00 p.m.
